Partner Spotlight: Center for Great Apes

Mazuri Exotic Animal Nutrition is proud to partner with various rescues, organizations and sanctuaries around the world. These organizations dedicate their efforts and resources to the safety, preservation and health of exotic and endangered animals.

Among the first of its kind in the United States, the Center for Great Apes provides a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees, many of whom have been rescued or retired from the entertainment, research or exotic pet industries.

Founder Patti Ragan started the organization in the early nineties after identifying the need for experienced great ape care and protection in the U.S. In the years since, the Center has expanded the facilities, staff and resources to care for more than 50 residents. It is the only accredited orangutan sanctuary in the United States.

Habitats & Care

All residents of the Center have been raised in captivity and are unable to be released in the wild. As such, the Center provides lifetime care for every ape that joins the sanctuary.

Habitats are designed to offer plenty of room for the apes to run, climb and swing, as well as provide enrichment through swinging vines, toys, tubs, culverts and more. All habitats have attached night houses to provide a place for rest and retreat, and residents can explore beyond their habitat with an elevated tunnel and chute system. For residents requiring special care, the Center also has specially-designed areas for handicapped and older apes.

Serenity

A sense of calm and feeling of serenity and peace are vital to the habitat and care structure at the Center. From the volunteers to the design and flora of the habitats, every aspect of care at the Center provides calm, relaxation and serenity to the residents and the facility as a whole. Encouraging serenity and peace benefits overall resident health, happiness and wellbeing.
