Want Healthy, Happy Mini Pigs? Choose Feed With the Best Ingredients

Choosing mini pig food and treats made with the right blend of supplements, vitamins and minerals can help your mini pigs look, feel and act their best. But, doing so requires reading labels and searching for a few key ingredients, which can be intimidating. Reading ingredient lists can be like trying to decode hieroglyphics.

Fortunately, our Mazuri experts have studied mini pig food and nutrition and developed mini pig feeds and treats with high-quality ingredients you can trust and a taste your pets will love.

Here’s a list of key ingredients (found in every bag of Mazuri mini pig food and treats) and how they benefit your sweet mini pig:

Biotin and vitamin B complex

Biotin is a B-vitamin that helps your mini pig convert feed into energy. It’s also an essential nutrient for hair, skin and hoof growth. Signs that your mini pig may not be getting enough biotin include hair loss, itchy dry skin, and cracked hooves.

Vitamin D3

We like to call this the sunshine vitamin! It helps your mini pig absorb calcium, grow, repair bones and teeth, and supports their immune system. In the middle of summer when the angle of the sun is right, humans and minis can get their daily D3 requirement by spending time in direct sunlight. But during other months and for minis who spend more time indoors, look for feeds and treats with added vitamin D. Mini pigs that aren’t getting enough vitamin D may not grow to their full potential. They also may have weak bones and other bone health problems.

Vitamin C

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is needed for healthy skin, tendons and cartilage.

Niacin/vitamin B3

Like other B vitamins, niacin helps convert feed into energy.  It also helps build keratin to help keep their skin healthy. If a mini pig isn’t getting enough niacin, it may have inflammatory lesions on its digestive tract that may cause diarrhea, weight loss, rough skin and coat, or dermatitis on the ears.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oil, flaxseed and a few other foods and is key to your mini pig’s healthy skin and hair. It also supports a healthy heart and immune system.

Selenium and vitamin E

Both are essential nutrients that work together as antioxidants to fortify your mini pig’s immune system. A selenium/vitamin E deficiency may cause poor reproduction, muscle problems, a weak immune system or even death.

Probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria or microorganisms that help improve gut health which allows your mini pig to digest and absorb nutrients efficiently. Prebiotics are a dietary fiber that basically feed the beneficial microorganisms in your mini pig’s gut.
